HUNA - Waiho Wale Kahiko
Old secrets are now revealed (waiho wale kahiko) - so how would you like to have your life exactly the way you want it? How would you like to be living in harmony with everyone and everything around you?

Well by applying the ancient principles of Hawaiian Huna, what some people describe as spiritual technology or spiritual psychology, that’s exactly what you can achieve.

Join us on one of our programmes and find out how you can apply Huna to enrich your life. Huna is a craft to be learned not a religion to be followed and it's been said that "if you're not using Huna to manifest what you want in all aspects of your life, you're working too hard"

Background
Huna is a powerful and transformational system of practices, teachings, philosophies, and healing energy work, that have been remarkably preserved and uncovered even after the influences of Pa'ao, a Samoan chief, who arrived in the Hawaiian islands around 1000 AD, and the white settlers and missionaries, who followed in 1820, after Captain Cook's arrival in 1778, drove the kahunas, and the wisdom and knowledge of the Hawaiian nation underground. Huna or Ho'omana, the name used by the ancient Hawaiian's to describe their system of knowledge, and thought to be part of the original teachings shared by all the peoples of the earth, became less accessible and over time became “hidden”.

In 1827, under the rule of the white missionaries, the practices of the Kahuna were officially declared illegal. The zeal of the missionaries and the greed of the white settlers, with different values, culture, and religion, impacted greatly on the native population, robbing them of their dignity and identify. Their monarchy was overthrown and their Queen incarcerated. In 1893 the islands were annexed and in 1959 became the 50th of the United States of America.

Incredible as it may seem, in 1964, in what we would regard modern times, a Kahuna called Daddy Bray was arrested in Honolulu for chanting in a public place. Only after more than 150 years, in 1979, did the United States Congress pass the Native American Religious Freedoms Act that required the state of Hawaii to remove all laws prohibiting the practice of Huna, taking another 9 years until 1989 before the process was complete.

However more than 200 years had passed since the arrival of Captain Cook and the white missionaries, and the suppression by church and state had taken a serious toll, having successfully influenced “modern day” Hawaiians not to associate themselves with the spiritual traditions and practices of the past. There were also very few genuine kahunas of any kind left, and even fewer apprentices in training.

Even though the ancient teachings were unknown to most Hawaiians, and disregarded by society, the re-emergence of Huna was not to be denied and the knowledge that had been preserved and hidden for so long, gradually became accessible to those who were drawn to uncover the spiritual secrets of the past.

Today, the great healing, metaphysical and shamanic traditions of Hawaii are being kept alive and perpetuated primarily by the help of the same race that almost destroyed them, and classes taught by teaching Kahunas are attended primarily by non-hawaiians from around the world.

So What is Huna ?
Well first of all there’s a lot more to Huna than what can be covered here so take a look at the Resource page for useful links. Within Huna you will find that different understandings, traditions and practices, are determined by the lineage of the teacher. Huna philosophy teaches that the key to living a fulfilled life lies in the awakening and integration of the subconscious self, conscious self and higher self. It offers a vision of life centred in Love, a way of the heart with all mankind, nature and the Divine as harmonious parts of a cosmic community. This is not to say that the body, mind and spirit are separate entities in the first place, it’s just a way of dividing the complex nature of a human being into three convenient parts to be able to understand each of the functions and motivations.

Some say that Huna was originally called Ho’omana meaning to make “Mana” or Life Force Energy, the same idea as the Chi in Tai Chi or Prana in the Sanskrit language. When combined the whole word means to have power and one purpose of the original teaching was the study of the methods for increasing Life Force Energy and its effects. An abundance of Life Force Energy empowers each individual so that they can manifest in their lives the outcomes they desire. Learning to make connections with the sources of Mana both inside and outside oneself is key.

HUNA KUPUA
The fundamental principles of Huna described below come from the Kupua tradition of the Kahili family from the island of Kauai, through Serge Kahili King, who was adopted as the grandson of Joseph Kahili and trained by his family in "the way of the adventurer" tradition.

The wisdom of Huna can be expressed as seven basic principles that are essentially principles of manifestation, of the hidden or inner cause of outer events. The seven individual Hawaiian words that describe these principles have many extended meanings, so in translation for western culture Serge found it necessary to describe" the principles and add corollaries for each to more fully capture their essence. You can find a full explanation in Serge's book "Urban Shaman" as only a brief extract follows. Check out the links on our Resource page that will take you to Serge's Aloha International and Huna website where you can explore further and have the chance to order "Urban Shaman" or one of his other books.

The Seven Principles

  • IKE - The world is what you think it is
  • KALA - There are no limits
  • MAKIA - Energy flows where attention goes
  • MANAWA - Now is the moment of power
  • ALOHA - To love is to be happy with
  • MANA - All power comes from within
  • PONO - Effectiveness is the measure of truth

The Three / Four Selves

The concept of three aspects of consciousness is a useful way of dividing the complex nature of a human being into three convenient parts, each with its own function and motivation. Human behaviour and experience can be explained and changed through the interaction of three (sometimes four) selves, aspects or functions. Huna is similar to other systems of thought which deal with the mind and its effect on the Universe, but some of the differences are considerable. The differences in Hawaiian thought have to do with their nature, their functions, and their relationships.

  • HIGH SELF (Kane, Aumakua) - Inspires
  • CONSCIOUS SELF (Lono) - Imagines
  • SUBCONSCIOUS SELF (Ku) - Remembers
  • CORE SELF (Kanaloa) - Wills

The Four Levels of Reality

A third set of principles coming from the kupua tradition divides all experience into four levels or frameworks of beliefs about reality which can be summarized as follows:

  • Everything is OBJECTIVE - Scientific reality
  • Everything is SUBJECTIVE - Psychic reality
  • Everything is SYMBOLIC - Shamanic reality
  • Everything is HOLISTIC - Mystical reality
